Surefire way to grow clematis vine

Hello everyone - I tried planting a clematis vine two times in the past, but
to no avail. Yes I went to the on line Clematis Info page and followed
directions.

There was something said about the vine needed the roots to be in the shade.
The spot that I am thinking of planting it - is the North side of a 6' solid
wood fence. Now it's going to have to climb 6 feet before it reaches
sunlight - is that OK?

Can any of you tell me of a best chance of success tips I can use. How does
it survive in a pot, and what size should I use?
