Hi - there is a plant that I have planted in the shade that does very well
and marries well with most any plant and that is Artimesia 'Powis Castle'.
Sure brightens up my dark areas with it's blue-ish grey foliage. Most of
what I read says that this plant is full sun, but here in my zone 9 this
plant does beautiful in high shade-----does get a bit of dappled sun in the
late afternoon. I do not know how winter hardy this plant is but in a zone 9
"harsh" winter it did remain evergreen. (Please note my definition of
"harsh winter" - 5 continuous nights/days of below freezing temps....lowest
being 19).
