I have tried the JPF twice, in different locations, and both times it croaked on me. One came back the next spring but then died. Perhaps I should give it another try, but with rocks. Its one of those plants that I dream about.

This is exciting news to me. The very first plant I chose for my shade was
the Japanese Painted Fern. I had to move them one year, didn't get them
replanted, ended up sticking them in some planter boxes and bringing them in
for the winter.
Most of the winter I figured I was probably just watering dirt and that
nothing would come of it. But in the spring they started to come back up -
all but one. I transplanted them to their new area and they did well,
especially with the horrid summer we had. I looked at the root ball of the
one that hadn't sprouted and didn't have the heart to toss it. I stuck it in
a cool area of another garden and wished it luck. About half way through the
summer I noticed one day that it, too, had come up!
I have since moved it in with the others and they have spent the winter
outdoors where they belong. Have brought out some of my rock that I moved
with us a few years ago (I had some favorite pieces that I couldn't leave
behind.) Was planning to use them in the shade garden this summer, so this
suggestion about rocks and J. Pained Fern is thrilling news to me.
Thank you so much for your contribution of ideas!
