Penny, not Kay but can help here, I think.

Tovara virginiana 'Painter's Palette' used to be known as Persicaria
virginiana - member of the Polygonatum family.  Here's an article

I concur with the article except that mine will seed around a bit -
have found isolated seedlings quite a long way from the parent
stand....as in over 100 feet and 10 feet up a hill.  Mine have not
spread hugely in the three years or so that I've had the plant, but
Kay Lancaster warned on Gardens-L of this plant's aggressive habits
in Iowa...think she was talking about Iowa.  At any rate, seems like
it might be one of those plant that turns out to be quite aggressive
in some places and not in others.   Foliage is quite nice; flowers
insignificant but turn red in fall...interesting, but you grow it for
the leaves.
