I have set out on a study of hardy perennial tulips. Over the years, I
have grown tulips on a few occasions, but always with ultimately
disappointing results. Those times were so long ago that I don't know now
whether I tried to grow the wrong types of tulips, or if I grew them badly,
or if my experiences were typical of others'.
There are so many varieties that I can't hope to do a thorough study of
them working by myself alone. I would therefore like to beg gardeners and
Garden Clubs to consider my plea, and contribute your observations on
growing tulips, particularly in cold climates (USDA zones 6 and colder).
I would like to know how species and named varieties of tulips perform in
your gardens. I am particularly concerned with how long each variety
persists with annual bloom.
Please share with me your observations, giving the exact name of the
variety and how many years you have grown it, and how does it behave (i.e.,
bloom just one season and then in succeeding years dwindle? bloom reliably
year after year for X number of years? ) If you have special tricks to
keep tulips healthy and blooming year after year, please point those out.
Be sure to include your garden location by City, State/Province, and USDA
hardiness zone. Additional notes on microclimates, soil types, moisture,
etc., would be welcomed.
I will save all the information and eventually post a summary of it to the
list. I will allow the summary to be reproduced, with credits, in club
newsletters.
Please pass this request along to your friends who grow tulips, and feel
free to reprint this notice in club newsletters.
Information can be sent to me in a variety of ways: by e-mail to me at
<jshields@indy.net>
or by regular mail to me at

Observations posted to the listserver may slip past me unrecorded unless
you mark them clearly "TULIP DATA" in the Subject: line, as I often do not
have time to read each and every post carefully.
Thanks for your help!
