Not sure whether I originally got the seed from you Barb, but either the Zabrina or the bilbo filho (?) reseeds in my garden, so much so that I usually end up removing some.

I think you must treat this plant as biennial or even as an annual.  Other
sylvestris types bloom the first season and almost never return here.  You
can collect the seed and keep some cool indoors as reseeding does not usually
happen here where is is very cold also.  Malva sylvestris is very easy to
grow from seed.
