Hi Gerry--
With the encouragement of the folks on this list (or maybe it was
Woodyplants?) I did just that last spring. The plant survived the
operation, has put out a couple of new shoots that are about 6" long, and
we'll see what happens next year. I didn't know about the 3 years but
that looks about right. It's better than having to tear out an old
rhododendron and replace it, I think, especially if you like the color.
