Hello Nancy,
    You should be able to find the Fairy candles by their old stubble. Take a
trowel and dig carefully where you planted a few. I am willing to be you have most
of them still there. You should see firm roots yet beneath the soil. Since they
did not have a chance to get established well before the drought, my guess is they
went dormant early.
    I doubt you could overwater a Cimicifuga in garden soil... they mostly
appreciate the moist part and resent drying out unless they came up from seed in
that spot.
    Be interesting to hear if they are still there. Let us know when the snow and
ice melts.
