Rose of Sharon

I've been trying to turn two Rose of Sharon seedlings into standards. (I saw
this once at Longwood and fell in love with how they look.) I'm thinking of
keeping them only three feet high. In that case, would I need to prune the
roots? What if I let them get to be six feet high (when they really want to
grow to about 10 feet in the shade). The plants are now in pots in my
basement but I would like to add them to a very small (about 10X4) shady bed
that needs some jazzing up.
