No reason why not on the x hybridus. The old leaves have been destroyed by the
weather and are not taking up nutrients any more. Trim away. Hopefully, I will be
doing the same this week before the buds begin to open. Do wear gloves and long
sleeves (like that is an option this time of the year?)... those serrated leaves
can scrape... and sometimes cause adverse skin reactions.
