Greetings.
Can anyone shed any light on the growing preferences and hardiness of this
fuchsia? I would love to hear from Midwesterners who have grown it
successfully--or failed with it. I have a friend who wants to order it
from Van Bourgondien, and in attempting to discourage her I promised to
find out from my Shadegarden friends if there are any other sources. I
don't like Van B. much (and I believe they are or were affiliated with
Springhill Nursery which I also didn't like much), and it occurs to me
I've never seen Fuchsia magellanica offered from any nursery other than
these two. These two, however, make great claims for it. Van B says it is
hardy in zones 3-10. I am feeling skeptical...
I would be delighted to be proved wrong either about these nurseries or
about the plant. ESPECIALLY about the plant, having grown up in the Bay
Area where gorgeous fuchsias grew everywhere--sob. Wyman's Encylopedia
does say it can be grown in zones 5-6 if given protection but that it is
not as hardy as was once believed. Can anyone elaborate? And more
importantly, is anyone else offering it?
Thanks!
