I've never seen Fuchsia magellanica offered from any nursery other than
these two. These two, however, make great claims for it. Van B says it is
hardy in zones 3-10. I am feeling skeptical... >>

Bobbi,

This plant is also offered by many specialty nurseries in numerous forms and
hybrids. It is a dead duck in zone 4. I think it would be one of those
plants needing it's own microclimate in zones 5 or 6. I saw it all over
Ireland and once purchased a few. They are winter garden or indoor plants
here. Unlike the more familiar fuchsia grown in porch baskets, this one has
a blooming season and then rests for a long time. I think it is really a
shrub. Cut back in the late fall it regrows in the early spring and blooms
quite late in the summer. Ah, what wonders are not happily grown in the
northern half of this country. Logee's Greenhouses (online) sells some of
them and probably has more information.
