After some research last year, I happened upon
a fairly new red-leaved cultivar, "Moonglow."
Very beautiful, especially when backlit. I think
there is a picture in Dirr's newest woody plant
book with all the excellent pictures. Moonglow
has the reputation for holding its red coloring
through summer like Bloodgood (which I can
vouch for here, zone 6b east of Oregon -
although it was not a hot summer), and the
reason I chose it instead of Bloodgood is it
matures at about 15' instead of 25. Good for
the smaller garden. You may have to do some
homework to track one down, and they are not
cheap (unless you get them from a small time
grower - I do know of one in Oregon if you're
