[SHADEGARDENS] Soldanellas

I have grown Soldanellas from seeds several times, both S. alpina and S.
carpatica.
You don't need any tricks to grow them, just patience.

They germinate easy and well, usually after 2 weeks at 20C. The seedlings
are very tiny and grow very, very slow, only producing two or three small
true leaves the first summer. You have to watch them carefully to make sure
they get enough water. This slow growth continues throughouot the next two
years, but then when the plant has grown to 5 cm across it starts to grow
faster, and produce flowers.

I find S. carpatica the best of the two species I grow. The foliage is dark
green with purple reverse. They are also wintergreen. S. carpatica seems to
thrive well, even in partly shade. It also flowers very richly. Once you
have a big plant you can easily make new plants from the root shoots. It's
an excellent plant for rockgarden.
