From what I understand, Arisaemas have contractile roots that they use to
pull themselves down into the ground.
A. triphyllum (the common Jack in our N. American woods) is, indeed, a
tough guy and naturalizes well where it's happy. Some of the more exotic
relatives are a tad more choosy about growing conditions, germination,
drainage, etc. But, some of them are so incredible that they come way high
on the list of "gotta have", at least *my* list :-)
Anybody who is interested in this genera really should become a member of
the AEG (Arisaema Enthusiast's Group), which automatically signs you up for
Arisaema-L mailing list. If you're interested in joining, send Ray
Stillwell an email at grsjr@Juno.com to get the particulars. I have
learned *so* much lurking on this list. There is also a seed exchange.
This year (my first as a member) I received a package of 13 packets of seed
for varieties you're not going to find in most catalogs. I only hope I can
get them to grow and prosper for me so that I can return the favor in
future!
This is (at least for me) an addictive plant family. The more you have,
the more you want. Do go to the AEG Arisaema Page on the web and look at
the great photos...and start your own addiction :-) The URL is:
