Re: [SHADEGARDENS] fragrant hostas

Someone mentioned the following in a post a few weeks ago:

SO SWEET medium green leaves with white margins. Fragrant purple striped
 blossoms.

FRAGRANT BOUQUET light green leaves streaked or marginated with white and
 yellow. Fragrant white blossoms.

Are these hardy in zone 5? I've never seen/heard of them. Are they readily
available at nurseries or where can you order them from?

Hi Amber!
There are many hostas with fragrant blooms. Besides the two you mention,
consider also Hosta 'Guacamole', H. plantaginea, H. 'Aphrodite' and H.
'Fragrant Gold', besides others. It is doubtful you'll find these at most
general nurseries. Do you have access to a recent issue of THE HOSTA JOURNAL?
You will want to get catalogues from several hosta specialty nurseries. Tell
us where you live and I'm sure that someone close-by has a copy, in which you
will find ads all from reputable growers. If I were getting just one, it would
be 'Guacamole' which has a very beautiful variegation. (Of course, it is
probably the most expensive!) 'So Sweet' is also a "must-have."(Relatively
inexpensive.)

Clyde Crockett z5 Indianapolis IN--Yes, hostas are hardy in Zone 5-indeed it
is my opinion that it is the BEST zone in which to grow hostas! <BG>
