Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Helleborus Seeds

Hi Jane,
The answer is yes and no to your question about taking 18 months to
germinate Helleborus seeds. Now that they have dried and you are attempting
to plant them at the wrong time of the year the answer is yes. Hellebore
seeds are a warm, cold, warm germinator. A cycle must be completed. Fresh
seeds planted in the summer will germinate the following spring. There are
techniques for pushing the process used by larger nurseries, but I have
never fooled with it.
You could try placing them under heat now, moving to the refrigerator
later and then back out to warm once more to fool them.
I have seed sown last summer germinating now in the open cold frames
outside now. They are about a month early due to the mild winter.
Fresh seed is obtainable from many sources. Germany, England and a few
places here in the US including myself in very limited quantities to name a
few.
    Incidentally... say hey... almost neighbor.
