Hi Elaine,
A few of the grown cover type plants in my garden I would recommend are
Creeping Forget me Not - Blue-Eyed Mary Omphalodes verna. There are quite a
few cultivars and species out there to try.
Fern- Cystopteris Bulbifera the Bulblit Fern. Makes a nice cascade effect
down a rocky embankment.
Geranium maculata, the Wood Geranium for a tall groundcover of close to 2
feet. Other shade loving hardy geraniums would also be nice such as G.
macrorrhizum.
Iris cristata is a favorite of mine.
There are also quite a few selections and species of anemones to try.
Anemone nemorosa and A. ranunnculoides are my favorites.
Some others are Foam Flower, Partridge Berry, Pachysandra, and Phlox
stolonifera.
I would mix them up with shrubs and let them compete.
