Aronia 'Brilliantissima' (chokecherry) will take
even dry shade, nice deciduous shrub with
small white flowers in the spring and dazzling
red berries and foliage in the fall. The lonicera
standishii (winter honeysuckle) is mostly in
shade. Most viburnums will tolerate quite a lot
of shade, an extensive plant family with
blooms, berries, some have fragrant flowers,
blooming early to late. Probably my favorite of
shrubs, as I have about 6 of them. Very diverse
family. Corylopsis pauciflora (yellow bells in
spring), camellias, rhododendrons, kerria
japonica (bright green winter stems, early
spring yellow flowers), hydrangea, leycestria
formosa (incredible black berries surrounded by
reddish calyxes the birds love), chimnonanthes
praecox (wintersweet) wonderful early perfume,
daphne odora (wonderful late winter fragrance),
abeliophyllum distictum (wonderful late winter
fragrance), enkianthus (small spring cream,
red-veined bells, bright red fall foliage),
symphoriocarpus (snowberry - you get the drift
by the name - wonderful foliage), chaenomeles
(flowering quince) will even tolerate quite a lot
of shade. I can tell you more about any of
these shrubs if you are interested.
AND, there are may roses that do _very_ well
in shade and some even require it. I'll give you
those names, if you're interested.
When I first started gardening, I couldn't be
bothered with shrubs, it was perennials and
roses. When I wanted more privacy, I decided
to do some "homework" on shrubs. Now I
prefer them to perennials! I really love my
living fence.
BTW - I can't remember what zone you are in,
some of these may not be appropriate for you.
Let me know if I can help.
