I have a large residential back yard completely covered by a canopy of
oaks and hickories...at most, any spot will receive 2-3 summertime hours
of sun, and almost half gets no direct sun at all. I am growing hostas in
wide variety, azaleas and rhodies, pachysandra (of course), gingers,
ferns, begonias and a variety of annuals/perenneals that will tolerate
such conditions. I am also developing a growing enthusiasm for mosses and
their relatives...both shady and sunny varieties. Unfortunately, there
are only 15,000 species {|:-)].
In addition, I am the new editor of _The Chrysanthemum_, journal of the
National Chrysanthemum Society...these, of course, take all of the sun I
can find, which is principally on my driveway. My wife is the major mum
grower, and I supply her with muscle and moss for her bonsai mums.
