moisture and can handle mostly shade? >>
Two suggestions, both are native bushes which IMHO deserve more publicity:
1) Clethra alnifolia (Summer-Sweet), gets up to 10' tall, has racemes
reminiscent of Buddleia; the species has white flowers but there are a few
cultivars such as "Rosea" with bright pink flowers.
2) Cephalanthus occidentalis (Buttonbush), gets up to 12' tall but usually
more like 10' with an equivalent spread; the flowers are 1" diameter cream-
colored pom-poms, the leaves 6" long and glossy.
The native habitat of both of these bushes is moist, shaded spots, both are
hardy to Zone 5, and, my favorite part, both of these bushes bloom in late
July through August. I've seen both offered this year in a couple different
specialty catalogues.
Elderberry, Gooseberry and Currant would also do well in such a site but
they're grown more for their fruit than their flowers.
