Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Kerria japonica cuttings

John,
I would think Kerria japonica would root very easily, it tends to root on its
own when its floppy limbs are in contact with the ground for awhile. I would
take cuttings in mid-June, the way I do with any deciduous shrub I want to get
started, and put them in sand and keep them moist. In about 4-6 weeks they
should be rooted. After this, I put my cuttings into a nursery area (has good
soil) and grow them on. If you baby them for the rest of the growing season,
they should be ready to move to a final location the following year. I have
gotten cuttings of hydrangeas, viburnums, roses, ancanthapanax, euonomous,
holly, etc. this way. Since this is a really strange year, you might take the
cuttings earlier than mid-June. You want to get the new growth before it
hardens completely. Also, I do use a hormone powder on the nodes, and usually
strip the leaves from at least the last two nodes on a branch.
Hope this will be something you try. It's so easy to get cuttings going of
SOME deciduous shrubs. Let us know how it goes.
