Hello; we were discussing growing banana trees in areas in which they are
not hardy last fall. I had a Japanese species planted about 2' from my
foundation; I am not sure if the soil freezes that close to the house.
Anyway, I went out today and dug the plant up. The foliage and stems died
back, but the roots are full and white, with appropriate turgor. The crown
is a gooey mess, but there is nothing to indicate the presence of fungus; I
think the tissue died and is putrefying, though there is no foul odor. So
where do I go from here? Right now, the plant is soaking to remove any
insect eggs, etc., before I pot it up to get it going for a spring
planting-out. Should I cut away the crown tissue? I should mention that
it is a normal color, but is slimy.
