I really can't vouch for this from personal experience, but someone said to
take a shovel full of ants from one nest and dump them on another.  This
starts a war in which one nest will be destroyed.  Do this until only one
is left and then use some form of ant killer.  Supposedly minimizes the use
of potent poisons.
