Marlene,

I cannot find my clippping but do it every year w/o the clipping and here it
what I do. I cut peonies in bud with just a hint of the color showing. Using
three or four buds and no leaves (later add leaves from plants in garden).
Cut them eighteen inches or more. Wrap the buds in wet paper towels leaving no
air space. Then wrap the buds in several thicknesses of waxed paper (not
plastic). Store them in bundles in the fridge near the high humidty drawer.
I use the very back of the lowest shelf.

Every two weeks or when you think of it check to see if the paper toweling is
still damp. Ours bloom naturally in June. The stored buds can be kept until
August or later.

When you want to bloom the buds put them in a cool place in water up to the
top of the stalk. You can do this in the fridge. The later the storage the
quicker the blossoming.

I have not tried other species but gladiolus and carnation are also said to
store as colored up buds.
