What about some of the marvelous Nerium species and varieties? They are hardy
to z8. I know that you might think these too ordinary, but they are evergreen
in z8-10.
Oleanders make great "fences" in the warmer zones.
They are inexpensive and will grow anywhere in any soil, in your zone. The
flowers are exquisite.
Try also the gingers. Also, Callistemon subulatus might be nice.
