Much as I love the canadian hemlocks, Jenny - do you realize the attention
you would have to give these plants to keep them in any kind of decent shape
as a hedge - they are totally malleable and will do just about anything
required of them, but 160 feet of forever pruning - no, I would look for
something that will serve your purpose better.
Michael Dirr mentions that hemlocks "languish in zone 8" - Your Cooperative
Extension will have a comprehensive list of plant material that will suit your
needs and the helpful staff will be glad to talk with you about it. They may
even be able to advise you of the local offerings by state conservation
agencies of bundles of bare-root shrubs and trees available to you at this
time of year for a very modest fee.
So - be it for privacy, shade, or a windbreak - enjoy! And I'll bet others
on the robin, maybe in zone 8, will chime in.
