I looked outside and realized that "reveling" is kind of an
overstatement--it's more that my bergenia plants looked so much happier once
moved into deeper shade. They're still kind of puny, and I only get the
second June bloom, not the early spring one, and the flowers are nothing to
write home about anyway. My guess is that the plant does better where it's
not hot/humid and since I'm north of you my conditions are somewhat easier
but even further north (or more moderate)would be better. Incidentally, that
great garden Wave Hill, which is about a mile north of me, grows its
bergenias in deep, dry shade. Meanwhile, every winter my non-gardening
husband gives me his condolences for the purple-red leaves, which he
believes are a sign of illness (!).
