Re: [SG] dry shade---Bergenia

Dear All,
I agree with Gene and his comments about Bergenia. I have plants I have grown
for years and they spread, but I, too have only seen them bloom once. I'm
glad to listen to this discussion because I never really thought about how
worthless they are. Gene is right, there are a lot of plants out there that
would be better. I plan to take mine to the compost pile this year. I bought
(is it Bressingham Ruby?) the new red-leaved one thinking it would be improved
and that a red leaf would be attractive, but it green all year until the fall.
This is basically just like the other common ones, so I was disappointed. I
have had it for about 2-3 years now and it has never bloomed. It is growing
in a moist area with a lot of sun, while the others are growing in dry shade.

It was not they did not live and multiply... that they did. The large
leaves look lovely in early winter or late fall when they turn color, but
then they get beat up something terrible here without snow cover. In early
spring they come out of semi-dormancy too early and just as they are about
to bloom they get hit by freeze hard enough to kill the bloom stalk. I saw
blooms one year out of all the years they were in the garden. >>
