Re: Windrose

Marge et al.,
I have had very good experiences with Windrose. It's the kind of place where
the owner comes in from the field to answer the phone and take your order.
(I bet Gene is like that, too.) I particularly like them because they're in
the Northeast, where I am, and not in the Northwest or Southeast, where most
of the big woody plant nurseries are. This seems like a minor point--but one
year I ordered a Hydrangea 'Mariesii variegata' from Heronswood, and it
showed up with pink flowers, since, I suppose, it was planted in alkaline or
neutral soil, as would be found in the NW. The next year I got one from
Windrose and it had blue flowers--from acid soil like mine. It just made me
feel better that the second plant would have less of an adjustment to make
in my garden. (Of course, neither of them has ever bloomed again, but that's
another story.)
Windrose has a huge inventory. As with most other mail-order places, the
woody plants are often pretty small, and so that is always a consideration.
(I've found, though, that Roslyn ships bigger ones that most, on occasion.)
There is also a small, but interesting, selection of perennials, and I've
been very pleased with the ones I've obtained from them. All the plant
descriptions seem, to me, to be accurate and useful.

Windrose is at: 1093 Mill Road; Pen Argyl, PA; 18072-9670; (610) 588-1037. I
don't know if there is a web site or not.
