here in Mississippi   they grow mostly in ditches along the roadside
where water stands, and creates a boggy area.  or near the edge of
streams
I think your sunny, wet area would probable be fine for the cattail
pay attention to the information of the folks that has experience with
this plant.   I've never grown them,  just admired them.
