My mud-hole is basically a container - I dug a 3' hole, put sand in the
bottom and lined it with pond liner, poked holes near the top to prevent
overflow, then filled it with soil.  You would not be able to plant more
than one variegated cat-tail in your modified 50-gallon drum, because the
plant is too big.  If it was in a pot in the barrel, its roots would be too
restricted.  Mine has about a three-foot diameter area for its root run.
You should cut the barrel off at 3' or, rather than 18", so the roots
possibly won't break through the drum.  You would not believe the strength
of those roots!  There are some different miniatures that are beautiful,
but I haven't seen a variegated miniature.
