Re: var. cattail

Donna, you are right on the button to want to plant in a container.

Here's what the book says. He is talking about Graceful Cattail, Typhus
angustifolia, which is better for smaller gardens than the common big one.
He does not mention the variegated cattail and I have forgotten the size
of that, but presume it is also on the small side.

"Caution must be taken [when using this invasive plant in the garden]...
some kind of confinement is essential. An old whiskey barrel is ideal for
this purpose...[or] something like a muck bucket (a large-diameter,
two-handled, heavy plastic container available at farm supply and tack
stores) may be substituted." He suggests as companion plants (I presume
also in the container): Iris pseudacorus, astilbes, myosotis palustris,
and Lysimachia nummularia. You could bury this container, but he also
suggests using it on the terrace or patio for a privacy screen. The tub or
bucket needs constant moisture and lots of sun.--info taken from
PERENNIALS FROM THE LOWER MIDWEST, Ezra Haggard.

Do you have a sunny deck or patio where you could put one or more of these
containers?
