Dan Hinkley's reply - Cimicifuga dioecious?

Dear Diane,

I traveled with James Compton in Korea while he was there studying the genus for his doctorate at Reading, and came to know that C. dahurica is the only dioecious species in the genus. If some plants exhibit androgeny, which may be the case, I am uncertain, though the plants I grow from my collections in Korea are definitely and singularly male or female and express extremely different morphological differences, the male with wide spreading, many branched panicles and the females with narrow, short branched spires.

It has been my feeling for some time that many commercial offerings of C. dahurica in N. America are improperly identified; I have seen C. racemosa offered under this name at local nurseries.

Best,

Dan Hinkley
