Alfalfa pellets are used largely with roses.  The active ingredient is
triacontanol which is a "growth regulator."

Let's be clear on the use of that terminology, growth regulator.  It does not
mean that it accelerates growth.  It regulates a specific area of growth, and
there are many many types of growth regulators that function very differently.

Getting back to the subject, I believe that it's steamed alfalfa that one
doesn't want to use.
