Hello Peggy, Dave & Rich - I am also a new member, and I also live in Mass. I am in Reading, just north of Boston. Nice to see some "neighbors" here!

I have a typical suburban yard with many mature trees, hence lots of shade, and tree roots. I am considering taking down 3 bedraggled spruce trees that are suffering under some huge white pines. I'd like to replace them with shrubs that will form a screen in time, maybe rhodos, but I am overwhelmed with all of the choices available. The former owner had some sort of garden here, but it is long neglected. I've been removing brambles, daylilies (the old orange horrors) and seedling phlox for 2 years now. The area gets some morning sun, and is pretty shady the rest of the day. (The large pines are to the west). Does anyone have any ideas?
