Amelanchier is our earliest native shrub to leaf out (in January) and
flower. That is the only reason I appreciate it. I leave only a
couple and pull out the many seedlings. The native companion shrubs
it has here are snowberry and Oregon grape (Mahonia), both of which
sucker.
How about something berrying, like Callicarpa with purple berries, or
one of the many Cotoneasters with pale yellow, through orange to red
berries.
