Hi, Cindy. Yes, it was C. calceolus I that repeatedly killed. It was
pretty weak by fall, and just couldn't make it over the winter. Maybe it
died from no mycorrhizal fungus. I am not sure what THAT is, but I think
it helps the plant get nutrients from the soil in some way. The only place
I have ever seen it for sale is the Gardener's Supply Catalogue, who sell
it as an ingredient in a product called "Transplant Insurance." It is
described as "...a beneficial fungus which effectively extends the plant's
root structure for better moisture and nutrient uptake." So maybe those
fine, short roots on my C. calceolus were supposed to be that way, but they
just needed an extender to help them eat.
