Hi Cindy,

Mycorrhizal fungus is a fungus that lives with the orchid (on the roots)
and makes certain nutrients in the soil available to the orchid to use.
This fungus is also needs by the seeds to germinate.  The seeds are so
tiny there is hardly any food stored in it for the young plant to use,
so the fungus serves as roots and supplies the young plant with
nutrients.
