Sherryl,
Helleborus orientalis is a wonderful plant for shade. Just checked mine
this week. Our unusual warm wet January has caused the Lenten Rose to throw
up buds early. Mine should bloom in a couple of weeks if the weather
doesn't take a drastic turn . Helleborus orientalis foliage provides a nice
backdrop for other shade loving plants in the summer. Helleborus niger
(christmas rose-white flowers) has a spiny type foliage and does not seem
to be as prolific in this area. Foliage stays evergreen , often gets
blackened by our low temps. I have grown H. niger for several years and
have never seen it bloom.
A new addition to my damp shade area last year was Petasites. Can anyone
tell me what I can expect from this huge leafed beauty?
Sharon
