I live and garden in Westfield, Indiana. This is in USDA zone 5; our
minimum winter temperatures vary from 0F/-17C to -20F/-28C from year to
year. Our summer maximum temperatures range from the low 90s F (about 33C)
to about 100F (38C). Annual precipitation is about 39 inches (about 100
cm), spread almost evenly throughout the year.
I grow and hybridize Hemerocallis (daylilies) and also grow some bulbs,
both tender and hardy. I belong to the American Hemerocallis Society and
the International Bulb Society (IBS). Tender bulbs are grown in pots,
wintering in a small home greenhouse.
We do not have very much shade here, but we grow a few hostas. More to the
point, we are starting to grow many spring-flowering bulbs, some of which
are being planted under deciduous trees like Sugar Maple, Red Oak,
Hackberry, and Mulberry. I am trying to start Cyclamen coum from seed, and
hope to start a large number of Cyclamen hederifolium from seed next year,
to go at the edges of our bit of woods.
I am also interested in design of databases for recording information
about plants, whether in garden, nursery, or greenhouse. I have been
organizing and assembling databases on Hemerocallis hybrids, and would like
to develop a general horticulturally useful system for all the types of
growing I do.
