My garden is on a small, fenced suburban lot. The fence surrounds the south
back of the house as well as the narrowish east and west side yards. The
house is about 10 years old. The only tree of that age on the lot are a
clump birch, Green Ash, a yew and a flowering crab. Between the fence, the
trees and a few tricks I am able to have both shade and sun gardens. I am
planning for an evolution of my yard to more shade as the other trees we
have added since moving in mature.
I have about 70 different hosta cultivars that I keep track of. I have about
ten different daylilies that I am only so so on keeping track of. Some of
these are hand me downs from Hiram Percy who is an avid daylily person in
the area.
As to my tricks I use the north side of the fence which faces into the back
yard, clumps of Siberian Iris, and a few small shrubs to create shade for
some of my hosta.

I have several small minigardens which blend together. For example in a
small rock garden of about 4x5 feet, there is a tree hydrangea and a dwarf
conifer, several pentstemons and low sedum and creeping thyme and a Buddha
statue with a path of 8 inch lake rounded stones leads up to him. The are is
mulched with pea gravel. An evening light in a japanese lantern makes this a
24 hour delight.

In my "Angel garden" under the green ash are about 20 different hosta,
hellebores, dutchman's breeches, dwarf goatsbear, bloodroot, asiatic lilies,
a climbing hydrangea (only in its second year) and an angel statue seated on
a log.

I really enjoy placing interest found objects in the garden and haveing a
variety of plants rather than masses of the same. Feel free to contact me
for a visit if you will be in the area.
Heidi
