[SHADEGARDENS] New member bio

Thanks for the nice welcome, and as requested here is by "bio".
Hi everyone! I live in a SW suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota USA
zone 4a. I plan to lurk on this list and learn about shade plants, of
which I know little.
I bought a home on a heavily wooded 3/4 acre lot two years ago.
I've simply been watching what comes up as I have been working on
improving some very neglected soil. There are little plots of plants,
some planted by a prior owner, some wild, I think (wild plants, I mean,
but maybe owners too). Have no idea of the variety or scientific names
for them but I've got one each of a variety of ferns, a couple nice
bleeding hearts, several of only one type of hosta with plain green
leaves & purple flowers, some types of mints, oregeno, some cute plants
everywhere that I'm guessing are violets, only ONE daylily with yellow
flowers, a nice bunch of something I haven't identified yet, they are
about 2 feet tall, single sort of woody stems with very dark, green
sawtoothed leaves, and small purple flowers. I think I have a couple
astilbe, but they haven't flowered yet so not sure. I did start an herb
garden with valerian & echinacea purpura (sorry about spelling if
wrong). Valerian likes partial shade, the echinacea is still trying to
decide. I rather like low maintenance plants that spread, my gardens
are not tidy and I have become fond of them that way, very natural, &
little grass to mow.
Since I have virtually all shade, for the past two summers I drove
too far to a -too dry & too damaged by chemicals- community garden plot.
I'm giving that up this year, and am going to have a single tomato plant
in a pot in my one tiny sunny spot on my deck, and work on any veggies &
herbs I learn about that can grow in partial or maybe even dense shade.
Besides lack of light, my woods holds lots of cute veggie eating
critters, including chipmunks, deer, rabbits, chipmunks, racoons, slugs,
and chipmunks! Between all of these guys I harvested NOTHING from my
garden last year, except oregano & mint.
I'll enjoy your tips as I look forward to spring, and await the web
site.
