Re: [SHADEGARDENS] New Member -Reply

I have had success growing monarda in quite a
lot of shade, which hummers love (especially
red). Hummers also are drawn to fuschia.

I have recenely read about a ground cover
blueberry which the birds love and I guess they
also like gaulteria procumbs (red berries). For
an understory tree, if you have room,
Amelanchier (white flowers in early spring, blue
berries in June and brilliant red foliage in fall)
is very nice.

Many of the viburnums (shrubs) will tolerate
quite a lot of shade and many have berries the
birds will eat. Symphorocarpus (snowberry) the
bees are crazy for, as well as common borage
which I have grown in quite a lot of shade (it
seeds generously, but not invasively).

There are also quite a lot of roses that bloom in
shade and will produce hips for the birds in
winter. There is so much more than impatiens!

Lobelia cardinalis grows well in shade and the
hummers like that as well.
