This charming rush is hardy in Zone 4 here, surviving in both moist
conditions at the edge of the pond and in slightly dryer soil higher
up the sides. Pots that were left over at the nursery were simply put
in the pond in the fall and overwintered magnificently (almost
doubling in size over the winter- they must have been growing under
the layer of ice over them)...
At the Montreal Botanic Garden, it is growing (usually) at the sides
of a shallow, moving stream. The story goes that each year some
critter digs it out from its location in late fall to winter. Each
Spring it is found floating and uprooted, always alive, and is
replanted.
Plants come true from seed and emerge with the spiralled foliage from
day one. It is unbelievably cute at this stage. It is wonderful to run
your hands through the twisted and curled foliage, almost like
unknotting hair....
We are just emerging from 2 weeks without heat, hydro and water. 4
acres of trees are almost entirely destroyed. Some days this week were
-38C with wind chill. Only a fireplace for heat. The damage is
unbelievable. It was the only 2 weeks I can remember not thinking
about plants at all.
