Re: [SHADEGARDENS] deer and talk radio

Clyde,
The "sliced off and left where it falls" sounds suspiciously like cut
worms! Had you thought of that?

I have an electrified fence 8' tall (3 strands). The charger will "send"
for up to a mile of wire, and will cost from $75.00 to $250.00 depending on
a.) where you buy it and b.) how slick the sales person is who sells it to
you. The cheapest one works just about as well as the more expensive
version. I use fiberglass rods as "carriers", having experimented with
concrete reinforcing bars and constant patrols to find where I had shorted
myself out.
If you have enough trees, there are threaded insulators which you can
screw into the trunks..just be sure to unscrew at least 1 turn per season,
or the tree will begin to grow around it. Wire can be purchased on large
spools and can be very lightweight and still work fine. If you should
decide to try a fence like that, liberally smear peanut butter on the wire
in several places where you know deer regularly pass by, then turn it on.
Trust me, once they have licked the wire while it is "hot" they will think
twice about how attractive your "pasture" is. Heh, Heh!
