Hi, Sherryl and other Shade Gardeners--
Thanks for the warm welcome! This is a really great idea, to focus not just
on one plant but on an entire group. Most of you probably have heard my bio
on either the daylily list or the hosta list, but I'll try again, if anyone
can stand reading it a third time.
I'm married, with a husband and two about-grown daughters--one is 22 and
living in NY City (she is a recent Yale grad); the younger is a senior in
high school. I've been gardening on our ten-acre lot for nearly 20 years.
Most of our land is fields, so my primary plant is the daylily, of which I
grow more than 1200. However, more recently I've developed a love of shade
plants and have collected more than 200 hostas. (I left that list because
people just sniped at each other and I didn't learn anything.) I love the
Dan Heims heucheras and have just about all of the darker ones, other than a
few which died. I've also started to collect pulmonarias, but really
haven't wintered these over yet.
My growing of shade plants is limited by the limited amount of shade I have.
Our soil also tends to be wet in winter and very dry in summer. When I
develop our 3 acres of woods into gardens, I'll be able to grow a lot more,
but this is a pipe dream I'm saving for my retirement--5 years and counting!
Oh, and I forgot to tell you, by profession I'm a high school English
teacher. I teach oral communication, senior seminar, and yearbook--yes, a
class of 29 all quickly becoming experts at Pagemaker!
I hope on this robin I'll learn more about some of the more obscure shade
plants. I bought a couple of unusual asarums from Tony Avent last year and
would like some suggestions of un-fussy varieties. I guess that's about it
for now--
