Thanks to all of you that have taken the time to welcome me to the robin. You
sound like a great group.
To introduce myself to you, I live in Ooltewah ,TN on Lake Chickamauga. Since
retiring from teaching, I have devoted a lot of time, effort and energy to
developing a shade garden. Because of the heavy clay here, and our excessive
heat and humidity in the summer we often have problems growing some of the
shade plants that do so well farther north. At present our hostas get the
majority of our attention and the larger part of our growing area. My
greatest pleasure is in developing new, interesting varieties of hostas. We
also grow over 50 varieties of hardy ferns and are making progress in
increasing the types of companion plants in our display garden. In our area
some of the ferns are evergreen. The ferns, heucheras, asarums and grasses
offer contrast of color and texture to the hostas in the summer and keep the
garden from being bare in the winter.
My husband, Roy is collecting asarum. At present this seems to be the thing
that he enjoys most in our garden. We are eagerly awaiting information from
any of you as to the varieties that you grow and where they can be obtained.
We are continually looking for other sources.
