Hello Mary & Beth,
I deleted quite a bit of your message to get to this part........
SH>My husband, Roy is collecting asarum. At present this seems to be the thin
SH>that he enjoys most in our garden. We are eagerly awaiting information from
SH>any of you as to the varieties that you grow and where they can be obtained.
SH>We are continually looking for other sources.

You have quite a list of Asarum to choose from for your shade
garden. I am located in zone 6a that receives zone 5 weather fairly
frequently that limits my selection just a bit on asarum species
hardiness. Beth,, you are in about the same hardiness zone as I, perhaps
with a bit more snow cover for protection.
From personal experience here in my garden I have been successful
with the following for 3 years or more:
A. canadensis- Wild Ginger, A. arifolium- Little Brown Jugs, A.
europaeum- European Ginger, A. shuttleworthii- Mottled White Ginger and
A. minor.I do have about 6 more species on trial but have not had them
long enough to give a good evaluation on hardiness and environment for
success.
There are quite a few Japanese and Chinese gingers that should do
ok for you, if they can be located and when you do they can be afforded.
The Japanese collect and breed these things with a passion. In fact the
ginger leaf and flower can be found on family harolds going back
hundreds of years.
With all that is going on in the nursery world today it will not be
long before a wealth of species are available and at reasonably decent
prices. The process is already well in motion with Barry Yingers's years
of dedication to the asarum finally paying off, the expeditions to China
by nurseries once more and instant communication between all of us
collectors and nurseries.
