I have been growing ferns form spores for several years. In October of 95
the Hort society had a class on ferns were we put a small, damp amount of a
complet potting soil in a jar. The spores were added by holding the fern
leaf over the jar and tapping the leaf to disloge any ripe spors, allowing
them to fall onto the medium. I felt uncertain that any spors had fallen
into my jar and I did use my fingers and rub the back of the leaf for
insurance. The lid was put on the jar and the jar was placed in a north
window. Moisture formed on the inside of the jar and months latter green
growth was visible. The last two springs more than a dozen ferns of several
varieties were harvested. The jar has a bumper crop at present and will
prabely produce for at least another year.
The first year most of the crop was lost when transplanted out of the jar.
The second years crop has fared much better as the crop was moved to another
contained enviorment and hardended off very slowly over two months time.
Growing ferns from spores is for the paitient.
